Current state vs future state mapping
Two Maps, One Goal
Value stream mapping traditionally involves two maps: the current state (how things work today) and the future state (how you want things to work). MapVS makes it easy to create, compare, and track progress between the two.
Current state mapping
The current state map documents your process as it actually operates — warts and all. Guidelines:
- Walk the process yourself (Gemba walk) rather than relying on documentation.
- Record actual times, not standard or target times.
- Include all waiting, transport, and non-value-added steps.
- Note inventory levels between stages.
Future state mapping
The future state map shows your target process after improvements. To create one:
- Open your current state map.
- Click Create Future State from the map menu.
- MapVS creates a linked copy. Changes you make to the future state do not affect the current state.
- Apply improvements: reduce cycle times, eliminate waiting, combine stages, add pull systems.
Comparison view
The state comparison feature shows current and future state maps side by side with metrics highlighting the expected improvement in lead time, efficiency, and throughput.
Tracking progress
As you implement improvements, update your current state map. MapVS tracks snapshots over time, so you can see how your actual process is converging toward the future state target.
